Infielder drills — by age group

Footwork, glove, ground-ball, double-play, and position-specific drills for infielders from 8U through varsity.

Infield drilling is layered. Footwork first, glove work second, ground balls third, double-play and position-specific work fourth. Athletes who skip the order — who go straight to taking ground balls without working their footwork — develop range limits and mechanical drift that costs them at higher levels. Drilling with a tennis ball or paddle teaches the glove; drilling with a baseball and a fungo bat teaches the game.

How to use this library

Find your age group and your position below. Footwork drills are foundational at every level — the infielder who has clean footwork has range the infielder with quick hands and bad footwork does not. Glove work is the daily second pillar. Ground-ball routines integrate both. Double-play work and position-specific drills layer in starting at 12U for components and middle school for full-speed integration.

Each drill page includes the demo, the developmental notes for the age, the coaching points, and the most common mistakes. By high school, drills should be position-specific most of the time — middle infielders work the bag and double plays, corner infielders work the line and the long throw. Cross-training is useful at younger ages and at the start of the season; at varsity, specialization wins.
