Point guard drills — by age group

Ball-handling, pick-and-roll reading, court-vision, on-ball defense, and pull-up shooting drills for point guards from 8U through varsity.

Point guard drilling is layered. Handle first, footwork second, pick-and-roll reads third, pull-up shooting fourth. Athletes who skip the order — usually because they want to shoot pull-up threes before they can dribble against pressure with their off-hand — develop bad habits that cost them years to undo.

How to use this library

Find your age group below. Ball-handling drills are the foundation at every level — the point guard who can handle pressure with both hands plays through coverages that derail less-skilled peers. Pick-and-roll reading comes next, because it is the engine of modern point guard play. On-ball defense and pull-up shooting layer on top once the handle and reads are reliable.

Each drill page covers the demo, the developmental notes for the age, the coaching points, and the most common mistakes. Handle work is best done with both passive resistance and live defenders; the athlete who only drills against cones reinforces a clean motion that breaks down the moment a real defender steps in. Mix passive and live reps every session.
